The Bluesky platform, backed by X’s former CEO, is generating significant buzz in the social media landscape. Last month, it gained one million subscribers in just 24 hours, attracting many users seeking alternatives to existing platforms.
But how is this newcomer making its mark against giants like X, Threads, and Telegram? What are its strengths? And what challenges will Bluesky need to overcome to establish itself in the long run?
To answer these questions, we spoke to Victor Lefranc, PR & Influence Consultant at the agency Mot Compte Double. In this interview, we’ll explore Bluesky’s positioning, future prospects, key discussion topics, and the communities shaping the platform.
Bluesky is often seen as a return to the essence of Twitter “before Elon Musk.” It’s the independent alternative to networks dominated by the GAFAM, notably X, which has been criticised for its toxic atmosphere and constant controversies. This network appeals with its clean interface and spirit of direct and authentic exchange. Initially funded by Jack Dorsey, the co-creator of Twitter, Bluesky stands out with innovative tools, such as an API that facilitates the migration of subscribers and content between the two platforms, posts up to 300 characters, private messages, and videos that also enrich the user experience—all for free.
In comparison, Threads, with its strong Meta footprint, integrates seamlessly into the group’s ecosystem thanks to its Instagram-inspired design, but this close connection can put off users seeking independence. What makes Bluesky powerful is its approach focused on transparency and simplicity, catering to the growing demand for authentic and reliable spaces for exchange. In my view, Bluesky manages to combine the nostalgia of original Twitter with modern features that truly enhance the user experience. The same concept, but improved in some areas.
Let’s say it’s “mostly true without being entirely false.” The platform primarily positions itself as an idealised version of X, bringing back the features that once appealed to Twitter users: a clean interface, authentic and often humorous discussions, and a community that—at least for now—remains free from trolls and sponsored content. The absence of intrusive algorithms or “For You” recommendations, like those on X or TikTok, reinforces this back-to-basics feel. This simplicity has also attracted media outlets such as Ouest France, Sud-Ouest, and The Guardian, which are turning away from X, highlighting a shift in how information is shared.
Culturally, Bluesky stands out with its effective moderation and filtering tools, allowing for a personalised and balanced experience. Unlike the fake news problem plaguing X or the mental health concerns linked to TikTok, Bluesky cultivates an image of a “clean” platform where quality discussions take precedence over sensationalism. The decision to double its moderation team is reassuring and signals a clear commitment to maintaining this healthy environment.
However, this harmony is partly due to the platform’s relatively small user base. If Bluesky were to grow rapidly, it could face the same challenges as X, TikTok, or other platforms like Clubhouse and Mastodon, whose initial success wasn’t enough to ensure long-term sustainability. For now, Bluesky looks promising, but its future will depend on its ability to scale without losing its core identity.
Topics such as politics, ecology, activism, culture, science, and pop culture take centre stage on Bluesky. Unlike platforms where algorithms favour divisive content, Bluesky stands out with a more peaceful and considerate approach, featuring fewer clashes and more constructive discussions.
This difference is particularly noticeable in how users engage with topics. Conversations tend to have more depth, with a focus on quality rather than buzz or pointless controversy. Bluesky doesn’t impose predefined themes, and its structure and community-driven spirit encourage richer, more varied discussions where ideas can truly flow. Logging in feels less overwhelming and stressful compared to other platforms.
Bluesky is home to a wide range of communities, including journalists and media outlets, video game enthusiasts, artists, and those passionate about science, health, and new technologies. The platform also stands out for its strong presence of progressive communities, including LGBT+ groups, comedy fans, and activists. This diversity creates an engaging space where users can easily find their place and connect based on shared interests.
One of Bluesky’s unique features is its “starter packs”, which offer account suggestions based on users’ interests. This helps new users quickly build a strong and relevant community ecosystem. For example, upon joining, we were able to follow journalists from outlets like Actu.fr and Le Monde, making it easier to explore the platform’s tools and engage with key voices. With its diverse communities and potential for innovation, Bluesky is positioning itself as a credible and promising tool for decision-makers and news enthusiasts alike.
Bluesky has strong assets that make it an appealing alternative to X, Threads, and other social platforms, but its long-term success will depend on several factors. On the one hand, its decentralised approach, absence of intrusive algorithms, and engaged communities create an authentic and refreshing user experience. The platform has also managed to attract key voices, including journalists and cultural figures, reinforcing its credibility. Features like starter packs and effective moderation contribute to a positive environment that many users find appealing.
However, Bluesky still faces major challenges. Its current appeal is partly due to its exclusivity—a smaller, invite-only user base helps maintain its quality discussions. If the platform scales up too quickly, it risks encountering the same issues as X or Threads, such as content moderation difficulties, spam, and polarisation. Additionally, monetisation and sustainability remain open questions. Unlike Meta or X, Bluesky lacks a large financial safety net, meaning it must find a way to sustain itself without compromising its principles.
Ultimately, while Bluesky is a promising and innovative platform, whether it can dominate the social media landscape will depend on its ability to grow while maintaining its core values. If it strikes the right balance, it could carve out a lasting place as a go-to network for quality discussions.
