Three days out from his inauguration, Donald Trump once again finds himself at the centre of global attention. Social media discussions have been rapidly gaining momentum ahead of his return to the White House for a second term. A true viral phenomenon, he has become the most talked-about president worldwide, surpassing his counterparts.
Visibrain, the social listening tool, examines Trump’s return to power during the lead-up to his inauguration, through the lens of social-media.
During his presidential campaign, Trump dominated social media headlines. Since his reelection, Joe Biden's successor has continued to blow up on these platforms. In just a few weeks, over 236 million messages have been posted about him, highlighting the controversy and debate he continues to fuel.
A prominent figure online, he has been the subject of over 3.3 million messages on average each day since the election results, reflecting the ongoing controversy surrounding him.
Far ahead of his counterparts in terms of online chatter, the future president of the United States, is the most mentioned across social media. As shown below, he has been at the centre of almost 46 million messages, that's 5 times more than Turkish president Erdogan and 8 times more than the India's Narendra Modi.
For comparison, Donald Trump receives twelve times more mentions than French President Emmanuel Macron, who is also frequently discussed on social media, particularly in light of recent developments.
In comparison with previous US leaders, Donald Trump remains the president generating the most noise on social media: 73% more messages than Joe Biden at the time of his reelection and twelve times more than Barack Obama.
Very active on social media throughout the presidential campaign, Donald Trump even created a TikTok account, despite having previously criticised the Chinese platform. However, since November 6, 2024, he has shifted his digital strategy, becoming more discreet. By abandoning his TikTok account, he sends a strong signal.
Trump now focuses on the social network of his ally, Elon Musk, where he posts twice as many messages as on Instagram. His editorial choices vary: a more institutional tone on X compared to a more entertainment-focused approach on the lifestyle-oriented Instagram.
