20 million tweets and counting: the social data behind Pokémon Go
July 21 2016Even if you don’t play Pokémon Go, you’re bound to have heard about it by now. Nintendo’s virtual reality game has taken the world by storm. Over the past two weeks, the gaming phenomenon has been the centre of attention in the press and on social media, racking up an incredible 23 million tweets so far.
Visibrain looks into some of the key stats behind the record-breaking app.
An overwhelming response on social media
The initial response to Pokémon Go on social media was nothing short of incredible: there were 773,705 tweets about the game in the first 24 hours alone. 48 hours after the game’s release, that number had skyrocketed to nearly 2 million. Since then, the number of tweets for Pokémon GO have been averaging at over 1 million tweets per day.
The game was trending on Twitter for days on end as it was gradually rolled out across the world.
At the time this piece was written, tweet volumes about Pokémon Go had reached 24,137,647 tweets:
The social media mania is far from over: certain key countries such as Japan still don’t have access to the game yet.
Pokémon Go has been a massive hit in the US, but other countries are starting to catch up. In Europe, the country with the highest tweet volumes for Pokémon Go is the UK, followed by Spain. The game has not even been made available in France yet, but that hasn’t stopped French fans from tweeting about it in anticipation, putting France in third place, followed by Germany and the Netherlands.
#TeamMystic gets the biggest following
For those unfamiliar with the game: each new player gets to choose between one of three teams: Team Mystic, Team Valor and Team Instinct.
Team Mystic is the most popular of the teams in terms of tweet volumes, followed by Team Valor. Team Instinct has the smallest amount of mentions by far:
Twitter being Twitter, there has been a growing rivalry between the Teams:

Pikachu is still the star of Pokémon
We also took a look at which of the starter Pokémon (meaning the Pokémon you get to choose as your first at the start of the game) was the most popular on Twitter.
Of the four the game offers - Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur or Pikachu (who is only accessible if you know how to do it) - Pikachu wins by a landslide. Squirtle was the second most popular, followed by Charmander and Bulbasaur.
It’s hardly surprising that volumes around Pikachu are so high. As one of the old classics Pikachu is still massively popular, and one of the most highly-prized catches of Pokémon Go:
