How did we do it?
1 - Get fit at the Gym
Surprise surprise, joining the gym is the most-tweeted New Year’s resolution for 2016. The words “gym”, “fit”, “fitness” and “workout” have been tweeted 18,714 times since December 25th. This post by @danmarinari was in the top most-retweeted:

The most-shared link in tweets about getting fit for 2016 was an article from appleinsider.com about fitness apps:
However, it’s a well-known fact that the sale of gym memberships soars in January, and regular gym-goers were also taking to Twitter to express their frustration at the sudden rush of new arrivals:

2 - Lose weight
Predictably, losing weight and healthy eating are also a priority for many this January. The words “weight” “diet” and “health” have been used in 16,733 tweets, making it the second top New Year’s resolution this year.
The most-retweeted post about New Year weight-loss was tweeted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who seems to be having trouble with his pledge already…

Good luck Arnie.
3 - Quit smoking
Next up on our list of top pledges for 2016 is giving up cigarettes, with 4,949 tweets from smokers vowing to quit for good. The number may have been helped along by a certain celebrity who had allegedly also made the resolution…

— JustinBieberCrew.com (@JBCrewdotcom) January 5, 2016
If we look at the top hashtags used in tweets about giving up smoking, we can see that e-cigarettes are a hot topic for those trying to quit: #ecigs is the third most common hashtag.
4 - Save Money
Saving money and better money management are also among the top New Year’s resolutions for 2016. 3,544 tweets containing the word “money” have been posted since December 25th. The most retweeted post is this tip from @HSBC_UK:

— HSBC UK (@HSBC_UK) December 30, 2015
Interestingly, fitness and finance seem to come together in this particular resolution, as the most-shared link in tweets about saving money is an article from Forbes about saving money on a gym membership.
