Twitter's favourite Christmas Ads for 2015
December 16 2015Love them or hate them, ‘tis the season of the Christmas ad. This year’s festive adverts have given us the usual mixture of heart-warming sentiment and mouthwatering food, with tear-jerking masterpieces and some downright weirdness thrown in for good measure.
Now that the initial excitement is over, we used Visibrain Quick Trends to look back on the last 30 days of activity on Twitter, to find out which campaigns are still generating the most tweets on the run up to Christmas.
Tweet volumes supplied were taken at the time this article was written, and take into account tweets sent between November 15th and December 15th.
1- John Lewis - 18,043 tweets
Surprise surprise, John Lewis has done it again. Although their heart-wrenching #ManOnTheMoon ad wasn’t as popular as some of their previous creations, it certainly got people talking on Twitter. The campaign launched on November 5th, and #ManOnTheMoon was used in over 150,000 tweets during the first week of November.
This is one of the most amazing things I've ever watched. What a great message! #ManOnTheMoon https://t.co/DpspEvRszj via @johnlewisretail
— Chris Fritchie (@chrisfritchie) December 6, 2015
The campaign is still going strong however, and has generated 18,043 tweets over the past 30 days.
2- Aldi - 14,879 tweets
After encountering a few problems with their campaigns in the past, Aldi’s tear-free festive ad was a safe bet this year. Aldi’s “Favourite Things” has just the right amount of classic festive cheer. The original ad itself didn’t really get people tweeting, but the brand delighted Twitter with their humourous spoof of the John Lewis #ManOnTheMoon advert:
Ultimate marketing win! @AldiUK Telescope Christmas Advert 2015 https://t.co/A25QBRL2Ya #AldiFavouriteThings
— Jenny McRae (@jennycmcrae) November 26, 2015
The tongue-in-cheek ad, along with a festive competition, really boosted the use of the #AldiFavouriteThings hashtag: Aldi’s efforts have attracted 14,879 tweets over the past 30 days.
3- Edeka - 12,233 tweets
German supermarket group Edeka surprised us all this year by taking a leaf out of John Lewis’ book. Their sad advert depicts an old man left on his own at Christmas by his family. Twitter users were touched by the sentiment:
Another ad that is true, beautiful, and precious - worth a watch - EDEKA Weihnachtsclip - #heimkommen https://t.co/JJGEyw9irW via @YouTube
— Norman de Greve (@ndegreve) December 12, 2015
The ad went viral on Twitter, and has been tweeted 12,233 times over the past 30 days.
4- Asda - 11,150 tweets
This year, Asda’s Christmas ad is all about the things you do just #BecauseItsChristmas. With its fun vibe and funky soundtrack by X-Factor contestant Fleur East, : the supermarket’s ad has been a hit:
Absolutely loving #becauseitschristmas #Asda campaign, has made me smile so much
— Sally Biddulph (@SallyBiddulph) December 5, 2015
Over the past 30 days, there have been 11,150 tweets referring to #BecauseItsChristmas.
5- Sainsburys - 10,359 tweets
Sainsbury’s supermarket chain offered us the adorable “Mog’s Christmas Calamity” as their ad this year, and Twitter loved it:
Best Christmas ad ever #mogthecat #socute https://t.co/FDaanELJwN
— loup-garou (@darain39) December 5, 2015
Only just seen the sainsburys Christmas advert...beats John Lewis by a mile and a half!!
Tears rolling 😢 #mogthecat
— scaramouche (@_halfblood) December 4, 2015
I love the sainsburys advert #mogthecat 💛💛💛
— eliza (@Elizacooke17) December 2, 2015
The loveable character of Mog the Cat appealed to viewers and there have been 10,359 tweets about the ad over the past 30 days.
Cats and the internet, a match made in heaven.
6- Waitrose - 8,637 tweets
This year, Waitrose was asking people what #MakesChristmas for them, and Twitter was more than happy to respond:
@waitrose Christmas starts with families being together and ending with delicious food, that sums up it up.

@waitrose #MakesChristmas family makes my Christmas, sitting in front of the fire with a hot chocolate ad watching Christmas films.
— •PLEASE SEB• (@olzanskifordays) December 6, 2015
Waitrose #MakesChristmas has been tweeted about 8,637 times over the past 30 days.
7- Warburtons - 6,204 tweets
In an ad curiously free of all Christmas paraphenalia, Warburtons teamed up with the Muppets this year to promote their Giant Crumpets in a hilarious musical spectacular: “The Giant Crumpet Show”. Twitter lapped up the light-hearted silliness of it all:
@Warburtons Fabulous new #GiantCrumpet ad! https://t.co/gVCBn9wd4x
— Anna Taylor (@AnnaTaylor_FDF) November 18, 2015
The @Warburtons #giantcrumpet advert seriously never gets old!!
— Hannah Blackburn (@HannahBlackburn) November 27, 2015
Joining forces with a Christmas classic like the Muppets proved to be a success: there have been 6,204 tweets about the #GiantCrumpets campaign over the past 30 days.
8- Lidl - 3,723 tweets
Lidl’s #SchoolOfChristmas ad is a tongue-in-cheek creation about all of the challenges of Christmas, big and small, from untangling the Christmas lights to preparing a flawless Christmas dinner. The light tone of the ad, along with the concept of providing clever tips and advice to make Christmas that little bit easier, was popular on Twitter:
Loving the @LidlUK #SchoolOfChristmas advert! Brilliant. Made me chuckle. 😁
— Thorpeedo (@Thorpeedo) December 8, 2015
I feel sad that #schoolofchristmas isn't a real thing every time the ad comes on. I want a job there teaching christmas spirit.
— DinosaurPirate (@RStarDinoPirate) December 9, 2015
The campaign has drummed up a respectable 3,723 tweets over the past 30 days.
Bonus: Robert Dyas
Home appliance store Robert Dyas was a latecomer to the Christmas ad party, and they left Twitter perplexed with their advert, titled: ‘We’re Robert Dyas and we’re gay. And straight. And bi…’.
The bizarre advert features employees and customers declaring their sexuality, before explaining why they like to shop at or work for Robert Dyas.
It has certainly sparked a debate on Twitter: 2,627 tweets have been posted about the campaign since its release on December 10th:
Here are some of Twitter’s reactions to the ad:
So it's blunt, it's bizarre, it's low (no?) budget - but the new @RobertDyas ad is a hit! https://t.co/TyoeDxyget #socialmedia #Christmas
— Hugh Burrows (@Hugb1) December 15, 2015
Now going to watch that Robert Dyas ad all day, like Alan Partridge directing the worst Apprentice task ad ever conceived. Comedy magic.
— tom jamieson (@jamiesont) December 13, 2015
"Hi, I'm Gay, and I really hate this 'advert' by @RobertDyas. You can be Gay or Straight and still hate this ad" https://t.co/lJMlDlo2Db
